Education technology’s great leap forward has ushered in new ideas about what students should be learning, how best to teach it to them, and where that learning can take place. But in order to truly leverage the revolutionary pedagogies and tools at our fingertips, assessment must also shift. Make no mistake: this is not about finding ways to maintain the integrity of closed-book tests in a remote learning situation — this is a reimagining of the purpose and benefit of assessment, for students and teachers alike. This workshop introduces the principles of Journey Based Assessment, and provides platform agnostic strategies and tools to embed triangulation (documenting conversations, observations, and student products), assessment of process, and advancement upon mastery — in an individual class, or across an entire school. Using this framework, teachers and school leaders can collect and analyze robust data, and use it to monitor engagement and provide deep-dive, personalized feedback about student progress. Attendees are guided through a collaborative, iterative process through which they design a framework to embed Journey Based Assessment practices that leverages their school’s LMS and technology resources and, most importantly, deeply engages their students.
