During this guided workshop, Kim and Natalie will share a variety of literacy strategies that FSL educators can implement in the classroom to support the reading and writing skills of all students, including those with reading disabilities. They will share the research that supports a Structured Literacy approach to reading instruction for students and discuss the importance of creating a systematic, explicit, cumulative, and multi-sensory French literacy program. They will also share how a Structured Literacy approach to reading ensures more equitable access to essential reading strategies than traditional reading models, as stated by the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Right to Read report (May 5, 2021). During the workshop, Kim and Natalie will offer practical, evidence-based reading strategies and show teachers how to create materials (i.e. decodable text) and resources (i.e. Code packs) that are needed for struggling learners that can be used in person and in the online classroom. Participants will leave this workshop with the essential knowledge and tools they need to support ALL French Second Language learners, including those with reading disabilities, so that they can achieve success in reading, writing, and spelling.
