Educator Session
Voice and Choice: helping students develop their writing by choosing their path
Jim Pedrech
In this presentation, participants will learn about an approach to English class wherein student writing options and forms are tied to their interests. Instead of requiring every student to do the same thing, teachers become curators of form, content, and style, providing entry points for students so that they can develop their writing in ways that match their needs. Interested in literature? Mimic the work of authors. Thinking of a career in sports? Study the style of sports journalists. Foresee a career in the trades? Write about your love of your craft.
Not sure what to write? We have lots of options, including reviews, argumentative pieces, and personal reflections. Don’t see something that engages you? Propose you own, and we will add it to our ever-growing library of options.
